Many Connecticutt coastal towns were attacked during the War of 1812 by British Raiding Partie that came ashore and carried off cattle and just about anything that was not nailed down. Connecticutt Governor John Cotton Smith refused to allow Connecticutt militia to serve outside of the state of Connecticutt because they were needed to defend Connecticutt's coast. Six thousand Connecticutt militia did participate in the defense of New London.
